Speak Up In the Marketplace

Updated: Nov 26, 2024

As women, society often place us in defined roles, suggesting we should "stay in a woman's place" and not venture into spaces traditionally held by men. While it's true that women are natural nurturers and bring order to what we do, this does not mean we are out of place in the marketplace. On the contrary, we deserve to occupy leadership roles and drive influence in these spaces.

I remember serving as an interim supervisor for five years, performing all the responsibilities the position demanded-and I did it without complaints. I worked tirelessly to ensure my team had everything they needed and gave constructive corrections when necessary. However when the permanent supervisory position opened, I was overlooked-not because of my performance but due to a minor, subjective measure from the management team.

That moment left me broken. After years of dedication and leadership without recognition or even a pay increase, the rejection hit hard. Speaking up during that time only earned me labels like "outcast" or "difficult," and my efforts to fit in occasionally backfired.

But through that painful experience, I learned an invaluable lesson: the marketplace is more than just a place of employment. It is one of the seven mountains of influence, specifically the mountain of business. This mountain is where men and women alike are called to fulfill their mandates as influencers and leaders.

Those five years were not wasted. They were a time of preparation. While man did not promote me, God was refining me for something greater. Despite the disappointments, my words and actions-both spoken and unspoken-demonstrated my resolve to stand firm and speak up. Here are some lesson I've learned that I want to share with you as you navigate your own path in the marketplace:

Tips for Thriving in the Marketplace

  1. Remain True to Who You Are

Do not compromise your morals or values to fit in or appease others. Stay rooted in your principles, no matter the pressure to conform.

  2. Keep Building

Remember, you are fulfilling an assignment. Distractions will come, but stay focused on your purpose. Build with excellence, knowing your work has meaning beyond the immediate moment.

  3. Press Through

Perseverance leads to productivity. Even when challenges arise, let your determination speak louder than your circumstances.

  4. Be Watchful

Use discernment to evaluate those around you. Avoid idle conversations and relationships that drain your energy or distract you from your mission.

  5. Live What You Preach

Your life should reflect the values you profess. When your actions align with your words, you become a powerful witness to those around you. Contradictions can cost you credibility and the opportunity to inspire others.

Speaking Up with Purpose

The marketplace is not just a platform for earning a paycheck-it's an opportunity to represent God through your words, actions, and influence. Your voice carries power, and when used wisely, it can impact others in profound ways. Never underestimate the significance of what you say and how you live in these spaces.

So, do not hold back your voice. Whether through speech or action, your contribution in the marketplace can spark change, inspire others, and fulfill the assignment God has placed on your life. Speak up, stay faithful, and remember that your purpose is far greater than any temporary setback.

Meet LaWanda Carswell

unnamed_edited_edited_edited.jpg

Hello, I'm LaWanda Carswell, a native of Macon, Georgia, and devoted servant of God since December 30, 2012. My Journey with the Lord has been one of profound growth and transformation, shaping me into who I am today.

In 2014, I stepped into ministry as a Children's Bible Teacher, guiding young girls aged 5 to 10 in their spiritual walk. This journey expanded as I began teaching Adult Women's Sunday School, empowering women ages 18 and up through God's word. By 2016, I was invited to speak at women's conferences, opening new doors for ministry and outreach.

God has continued to bless and guide my path. I've served an intercessor on "The Light" radio with the late Pastor Bobby Clark and hosted a 30-minute devotional segment,"Manna with LaWanna," alongside Apostle Vertise Rozier. Through these opportunities, I discovered my passion for sharing God's truth with others.

I am also a writer, gifted by God to inspire and uplift the written word. I've authored tow books: "Healing Words for the Soul" and "Day Break Devotions: 40-Day Journey After the Storm. Vol. 1," both available on Amazon. Writing has been a ministry of its own, allowing me to touch hearts far and wide.

In 2020, I launched a Facebook ministry page, "The W. O. W. O. W (Well-Off Women of Wisdom) Experience, " to post daily devotions designed to encourage, uplift and present the Word of God to women navigating the trials of life.

I deeply understand the struggles many women face, particularly the challenge finding and using their voice. For years, I silenced myself, even when I knew God had placed something on my heart to say. My prayer is that my words now flow richly and Godly, guided by the Spirit rather than flesh. This process of submission to God has been a journey, but it's one that continues to strengthen my voice with wisdom.

I believe that wisdom unlocks understanding, understanding unlocks knowledge, and knowledge unlocks the words that shape atmospheres and transform lives. Our voices have power-power to shift environments, speak life, and reflect God's glory. My mission is to help women embrace their voices, speak with boldness, and unleash the lioness within.
